I called a meeting aboard the Lee. Captain Marz, Captain Kepler, the Lee's chief medical officer Dr. Scott, Pete Vargas, and I gathered in the ship's conference room. I gave the floor to Pete and ordered him to tell us everything he knew about what had happened on Earth and what we were up against.

“Well, for starters, those bastards hit us out of the blue. Using kinetic energy weapons, they pretty much wiped out the defense fleet and overwhelmed the orbital weapons grids,” Pete said. “Some of the bits of debris that made it through did a hell of a lot of damage down here on the ground too, but that was just the start of things. Amid the chaos, those things you call Lancers, they just started springing up out of nowhere. We were already fucked . . . power and comms down in numerous places. And people were getting sick, too. The Lancers attacked anywhere they could, but in the early days, those things took away more people than they killed. We didn't have a clue what was happening to the poor bastards those things dragged off. Not until later. We started figuring out that it if you were captured, getting sick was a given. It just assured it. That was when we started to see that there were more than just the ones you call Lancers out there.”

Everyone in the room was quiet, fixated by Pete's tale. Me included.

“Go on, Pete,” I urged him.

“There was something out there in the air that was making folks sick. Those Lancer things carried it. Some sort of disease, a virus maybe. Once you got it, that was it. The few doctors still alive couldn't do anything to cure the shit once you had it. We tried to take care of the infected, but soon realized that was a mistake. A fucking big one, too. This virus, or whatever it is, it turns you into those Lancers. Rewrites your very DNA according to one doc I met. He had it, and spent his last days trying to cure himself before he turned and I put a bullet in his skull. He called the process of what it was doing to him Rewiring. It fit, you see. The shit that folks were getting was changing them into the very monsters we were fighting.”

“I can confirm this,” Dr. Scott spoke up. “What we have gleaned from examining the Lancer bodies your men brought to us Lieutenant Gray is rather disturbing. The Lancers were once humans, and were indeed changed into what they are now by a virus of alien origin.”

I was glad Dr. Scott didn't get too technical with what he was saying. It made him easier to understand.

“I'm not finished,” Pete growled.

I motioned for him to continue.

“Those Lancers aren't the only kinds of creatures out there. Some of the folks who got sick never fully made the transition into those things. They ended up big, dumb, deformed versions of them,” Pete said.
